God, which is the beginning of wisdom, is God’s free gift to us, for which no prior wisdom is necessary (PROSPER OF AQUITAINE). The fear of God can dissolve our human pride (AUGUSTINE), as we practice self-restraint in an effort for something better in life (CLEMENT OF ALEXANDRIA). Wherever God exists, there also God is feared (TERTULLIAN). The fool lacks fear and denies God (THEODORET OF CYR). To fear the Lord is to renounce sin (AMBROSE), but the true source of wisdom is virtuous living (AUGUSTINE).
